Supporting Disaster Relief

Both natural and man-made disasters impact Texas, which negatively impact and disrupt care for persons with End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD).  These natural disasters include hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildfires and ice events. Disruption of dialysis is a life-threatening situation for persons with ESRD and transplant recipients, as are loss of medications, limited access to renal diet safe foods and interruption of transportation.

The Foundation for Kidney Patients (FFKP) will support organizations that provide disaster relief for persons with ESRD.

Disaster Resources

The Texas ESRD Emergency Coalition (TEEC) collaborates with local, state and federal providers and agencies when disasters impact Texas to serve the ESKD population. TEEC is comprised of a broad based stakeholder group with objectives to improve access to alternate care providers during an emergency; develop standardized reporting forms; formulate a plan to assist emergency providers in obtaining treatment-related information on displaced patients during an emergency; develop a pre-event planning toolkit for facilities; facilitate staffing during an emergency and evaluate and improve current emergency patient education with an emphasis on informing patients of appropriate actions to take when they miss one or more treatments during an emergency. 1 (866) 407-ESRD | 1 (866) 407-3773

The Kidney Community Emergency Response (KCER) Program, under contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, provides technical assistance to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Networks, kidney organizations, and other groups to ensure timely and efficient disaster preparedness, response, and recovery for the kidney community. The KCER Program's disaster preparedness resources help save lives, improve outcomes, empower patients and families, educate healthcare workers, build partnerships with stakeholders, promote readiness in the community, and support the ESRD Networks.
